“A Minecraft Movie” dominated the weekend box office with a $163 million domestic opening, marking the biggest ever opening for a video game adaptation and pointing to widespread demand for family films.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainments PG adaptation of the Microsoft-owned video game “Minecraft” was directed by Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite,” “Nacho Libre”) and stars Jack Black (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) and Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”).

“Minecraft Movie” made the biggest domestic debut of 2025 so far, and along with the domestic box office, brought in another $150 million globally, for a total $313 million debut. The film was made for $150 million before marketing costs, which included campaigns with dozens of brands.

“As with ‘Top Gun’, there’s still a very strong appetite for family pictures and movie theaters,” says former Hollywood executive Seth Schachner, founder and Managing Director of Strat Americas, a business development consultancy in the digital media and entertainment sectors.

But “Minecraft Movie” has more going for it than just pent-up demand for family-friendly films. It’s also another big crack in the dam for a potential flood of movies based on video games. The wide appeal to younger audiences is already evident in the gaming industry’s crossover into music, bringing gamers new songs from rising and established stars.

“The ‘crossover’ between movies, music and games is already here,” Schachner says, noting that rapper Travis Scott was drawing millions of players to Fortnite all the way back in 2020.

He says the success of “A Minecraft Movie” shows there remains enormous potential for further crossover between games and traditional forms of entertainment.

“Game communities like Roblox and Fortnite — where (huge) audiences meet digital events — could be a big part of the future,” Schachner says.
