With National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month underway, a powerful new book, “Reservations for Nine: A Doctors Family Confronts Cancer,” by Dr. George Beauregard, sheds light on the rising incidence of young-onset colorectal cancer and the devastating impact it has on families.

The book is both a memoir and a call to action, chronicling the life and battle of Dr. Beauregards son, Patrick, a U.S. Marine diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer at just 29 years old. Despite enduring years of grueling treatment, Patrick dedicated himself to raising awareness about young-onset cancers, even appearing on NBCs TODAY with Craig Melvin in March 2020, just months before his death at 32.

“The death of a child is a parents worst nightmare,” says Beauregard, who is himself a young-onset cancer survivor.

The book aims to provide a roadmap by example of loved ones going through a cancer battle within their own families — as well as a call to action to the medical community.

NBCs Craig Melvin, who lost his brother to colon cancer, provides the books foreword, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and early detection. The book also features insights from Dr. Beauregards perspective as both a physician and a cancer survivor, offering guidance, reflection, and advocacy for those affected by the disease.

“Dr. George Beauregard has penned a book in blood, sweat and tears. His stirring account of his son Patricks extraordinary life and fierce battle with cancer incorporates his own expertise as a doctor and his own experience as a cancer survivor,” said U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), author of “Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth and the Trials of American Democracy.”

“The emperor of all maladies, cancer colonizes its victims and upends family and social life,” Raskin said. “In this poignant and life-affirming chronicle, Dr. Beauregard gives cancer patients and their families a compass and a map to make their way through the wilderness of cancer and its treatment. This is a true labor of love.”

With colorectal cancer rates rising among younger adults, “Reservations for Nine” serves as an urgent wake-up call to the public and medical community alike. The book is available now, honoring Patrick Beauregards legacy by continuing his mission to educate and advocate for early detection and improved treatment options.
